Menu Bar TV Remote

Support

A good place to start. A clear next step.

Get connected

Menu Bar TV Remote controls compatible Apple TV hardware. It does not control the Apple TV streaming app on your Mac.

  1. Wake your Apple TV with its physical remote. Connect your Mac and Apple TV to the same local network.
  2. Open Menu Bar TV Remote and allow Local Network access when macOS asks.
  3. Open the TV selector, choose your Apple TV and follow the pairing instructions. Enter the current PIN shown on the television only in the app.
  4. Open Settings → General to review the trial and purchase options. A trial or permanent unlock is required for TV control.

The app is being prepared for release. Final availability and supported device versions will be listed here when confirmed.

My Apple TV does not appear

An empty search can have several causes. Work through these checks, then choose Try Again or Refresh rooms.

  • Make sure the Apple TV is awake and both devices can reach each other on your local network.
  • On macOS versions that provide it, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network and allow Menu Bar TV Remote.
  • A guest network, device isolation or VPN can block local discovery. Check the settings appropriate for your network.
  • Open Help Finding Apple TVs in the TV list for more guidance.

If the app reports a helper error, choose Restart Helper from the status icon menu and retry. This does not erase pairings.

Find and move the remote

Click the menu bar icon to hide or reveal the remote. Right click or Control click the icon to open Settings, About, Help and the pin controls. Selecting the app with Command Tab or reopening it also restores access.

Pinned attaches the remote to its menu bar icon. Unpinned gives you a movable window. Drag the top handle to move it.

For a walkthrough, choose Show Tutorial… from the Help menu. To change the color, open Settings → General → Appearance and click the Accent Color box.

Pairing, typing and volume

Pairing fails or asks for a new code

Keep the Apple TV awake and use only the current PIN on its screen. Cancel pairing, refresh the TV list and try again. If an old saved connection no longer works, use Forget Device and pair again.

A control is unavailable

Check that the correct TV is selected and try Reconnect. Control availability depends on the connected device, TV app and audio route. Use your physical remote when a feature is unsupported. Sleep does not wake the TV.

Typing behaves differently than expected

The Apple TV must have a compatible text field open. The Mac editor starts blank. Your first edit replaces existing TV text, and later edits update it, including deleting all text. Edits from another remote are not mirrored back. Submission behavior can vary by TV app. Escape dismisses the Mac editor.

Volume does not change

Network volume depends on your active audio setup. Try a single click first. Holding a volume control repeats steps; release it to stop new steps. A command already sent may finish. If the route does not support network volume, use the TV or receiver remote.

Trial and permanent unlock

The free trial provides seven consecutive days of full app access. It continues while the app is closed or your Mac is asleep. There is no subscription and no automatic charge when the trial ends.

A single optional purchase unlocks the full app permanently, including every future update released for this app. The purchase screen shows Apple’s localized price. Your purchase covers compatible Macs using the same Apple Account.

In Settings → General, choose Restore Purchases if you already purchased access. Restoring or reinstalling does not restart the trial. If products are unavailable, check your Internet connection and choose Retry Store Connection.

After the trial, your saved pairings remain. Settings, Help, purchases, restoration and deletion are still available. Never send support your Apple Account password or payment details.

Remove data or uninstall

Forget Device
Removes one TV’s pairing credentials and related room state. Diagnostic logs are separate.
Clear Diagnostics
Removes local diagnostic logs while preserving saved TVs and preferences.
Delete All Local Data
Removes saved TVs, diagnostics, preferences, the local trial timing observation and the app’s launch at login registration.

Find the diagnostic and deletion controls in Settings → Privacy. Use Delete All Local Data before uninstalling if you want to remove the app’s local information. Moving the app to Trash alone may leave saved data behind. Deleting local data does not erase Apple’s purchase history, restart the trial or request a refund.
